Chapter 1 - The Night He Took Her Crown|

The moment Damian Viscari removed the Donna necklace from his wife's throat, two hundred and twelve people understood that something extraordinary had happened.
The moment he placed it around his mistress's neck, they understood that a war might follow.
Vivien Ashcroft Viscari stood beneath the chandeliers of Castell Verde Estate, watching her husband fasten the platinum clasp around Seline Maro's throat.
Seline smiled.
It was the smile of a woman who believed she had finally taken the one thing money, beauty, and patience had never been able to buy.
"Now everyone knows where the future of this family stands," Damian announced.
A few men shifted uneasily. Nobody applauded.
The Donna necklace was more than an heirloom. For generations, it had represented the authority of the woman who stood beside the head of the Viscari Syndicate. Its dark central stone had been worn by matriarchs who negotiated peace between families, controlled succession disputes, and decided which blood feuds ended before they consumed entire cities.
No mistress had ever worn it.
Until tonight.
Vivien looked at Seline, then at Damian.
"Are you finished?"
Damian frowned. He had expected tears. Perhaps a confrontation. He had even prepared a speech about how the old traditions no longer served the modern organization.
He had not prepared for that question.
"Vivien, don't make a scene."
She glanced around the ballroom.
"Which part of this evening did you imagine was private?"
A nervous murmur moved through the room.
Seline lifted her chin.
"Damian has made his decision. Perhaps you should respect it."
Vivien looked at her.
"Enjoy the necklace, Seline. You may discover that some gifts come with obligations you haven't considered."
Then Vivien removed her wedding ring.
The platinum band slipped from her finger without resistance. She placed it beside her untouched wineglass and straightened the cuff of her charcoal silk dress.
Damian stared.
"What are you doing?"
"Making your decision easier."
She turned and walked toward the side doors.
Nobody stopped her.
At the threshold, she paused long enough to look back at the ballroom. Thirty-one summits had taken place at Castell Verde. She had attended every one, remembering names, settling disputes, and preserving agreements that powerful men repeatedly threatened to destroy.
She had helped Damian build the authority he was now using to humiliate her.
She would not beg him to recognize it.
Outside, the cold night air struck her face. Vivien walked down the marble steps toward the waiting cars, refusing to let the guards see her hands tremble.
A black sedan pulled to the curb.
The driver stepped out immediately.
"Mrs. Viscari."
Vivien studied him.
"Who sent you?"
"Your brother, ma'am."
"My brother has been dead for fourteen years."
The driver swallowed.
"Yes, ma'am. But he left instructions for this exact night."
Vivien went still.
The man opened the rear door and offered her a sealed envelope.
On the front, in handwriting she had not seen since her brother's funeral, were six words.
When Damian gives away your crown, leave.
Vivien opened it.
Inside was a photograph of an unfamiliar woman wearing the Donna necklace.
On the back, someone had written another sentence.
And never let them find the original.
For the first time that evening, Vivien's composure cracked.
Because the woman in the photograph was not Seline.
May you like
It was Vivien's mother.
And according to every official record, her mother had died before the necklace was ever commissioned.
