Chapter 10 - The Aunt Who Never Died|

Helena Vale arrived at the townhouse the following afternoon.

She was in her late sixties, with silver hair, a narrow face, and the kind of composure that suggested she had spent a lifetime concealing her true thoughts.

She carried no handbag.

She wore no visible jewelry.

But when she removed her gloves, Vivien noticed a pale mark on her left wrist where a heavy bracelet had once rested.

Helena studied the room before sitting.

"Your mother had excellent taste."

"She had excellent instincts too," Vivien replied. "She knew not to trust you."

Helena smiled faintly.

"Margaret always confused caution with virtue."

"Did you arrange her death?"

The smile disappeared.

"No."

"Did you know she was alive after the family announced her death?"

"Yes."

Vivien felt the answer land like a stone.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because your mother wanted you to inherit the trust without being drawn into the council's history."

"Then why are you here now?"

Helena placed a sealed document on the table.

"Because the trust is about to collapse, and you are the only person who can prevent it."

Vivien did not touch the document.

"Explain."

Helena described the origins of the Donna council. It had been formed by several women whose families controlled shipping, finance, and regional trade long before the modern syndicates existed. The necklace was created as a symbol of their shared authority, not as the possession of any one family.

Over time, the Ashcrofts became the custodians of the trust that supported the council.

But the original trust had two beneficiaries.

The Ashcrofts.

And the Vales.

"My mother was an Ashcroft," Vivien said.

"Your mother was born Margaret Vale. She was adopted by the Ashcrofts after her parents died."

Vivien stared at her.

"No."

"Your father knew. Gabriel knew. The family records were altered to protect the trust during a succession dispute."

"Why would my mother hide that from me?"

"Because the original Vale line was believed to have been destroyed in a feud. Your mother feared that if anyone learned she was alive, the families would use her bloodline to challenge the council."

Vivien's thoughts raced.

"Then why does the trust recognize me?"

"Because your mother transferred her rights to you before she disappeared."

Helena opened the document.

The first page contained an old family seal.

The second listed the beneficiaries.

The third contained a clause that had been concealed from the modern council.

In the event that the designated Donna is publicly stripped of her authority without due process, the council shall convene and recognize the surviving custodian of the original Vale line.

Vivien looked up.

"You're claiming that authority belongs to you."

"I am claiming that the records must be corrected."

"And Thomas?"

Helena's expression changed.

"He believes he can control the trust through Damian. Seline believes she can control it through the necklace. Both are mistaken."

"Then what do you want?"

Helena leaned forward.

"I want you to stand beside me at the summit and announce that the Ashcroft line has ended."

Vivien stared at her.

"And if I refuse?"

Helena rose.

"Then Thomas will release documents proving your mother falsified the family records. The council will fracture, the syndicate will collapse, and every family that ever knelt before your mother will begin choosing sides."

She walked toward the door.

"Think carefully, Vivien. The next summit will decide who owns the past."

At the threshold, she turned.

"And who gets to write the future."
