At the counter, the cashier looked at him.
“Is your mother waiting outside?”
Noah shook his head.
“No. I’m buying this for someone.”
The cashier looked toward the window.
Then she saw the woman and the little girl.
She lowered her voice.
“You know them?”
“No.”
“Then why are you buying them food?”
Noah looked down at the paper bag.
“Because she looked hungry.”
The cashier said nothing.
