Chapter 1 - THE GIRL ON THE SIDEWALKEight-year-old Noah Carter was walking home from school when he saw them.

A tired woman sitting against the brick wall of a small grocery store.
Beside her was a little girl in a faded pink dress, holding an empty plastic bowl.
The girl looked no older than five.
Noah slowed down.
He had seen homeless people before.
Most adults walked past them without looking.
But the little girl was different.
She wasn't asking anyone for money.
She was simply staring through the grocery store window.
At a display of sandwiches.
Noah followed her gaze.
Then he looked down at the twenty-dollar bill in his pocket.
It was supposed to buy him a new toy.

He hesitated.
Then he turned toward the store.
