Chapter 3 - The Medical Lifeline & The Shadow

Within forty-eight hours, my daughter Daisy was transferred to the private pediatric cardiology wing at Dallas Medical Center under the personal care of the country's top pediatric surgeons—fully sponsored by the Carter Foundation.
Seeing Daisy smile in a sunlit private room with proper medication brought tears of boundless relief to my eyes.
Every evening, after tucking Mason, Michael, and Madison into bed with bedtime stories, I sat in the grand library reviewing the children's daily schedules.
Ethan began returning home before 6:00 PM every night, abandoning late-night boardroom meetings to sit at the dinner table with us. The cold, impenetrable billionaire was slowly softening, laughing at Michael's knock-knock jokes and watching his children play in the courtyard with genuine pride.
Late in the evenings, Ethan and I shared quiet conversations over herbal tea by the library fireplace.
We spoke of our shared losses, the weight of single parenthood, and the quiet dreams we had buried. The unspoken attraction between us grew with every shared smile, every lingering glance, and the gentle, electric warmth whenever his hand brushed mine.
However, the peace of the estate was not unchallenged.
Ethan's ambitious business partner and former sister-in-law, Victoria Sterling, viewed my presence as a direct threat to her plans to merge the Sterling-Carter corporate empires through marriage.
On a stormy Thursday afternoon, Victoria stormed into the manor, her designer heels clicking sharply against the marble.

"You're the hired help," Victoria sneered, looking down at my apron. "Do not confuse Ethan's charity with genuine interest. A woman from the East End will never sit at this family's table."
"I don't sit at the table for charity, Miss Sterling," I replied with calm, unshakable dignity. "I sit there because the children asked me to."
