Chapter 10 - The Master's Table

Two years after our wedding, golden late-afternoon sunlight poured through the French doors of the Carter mansion dining room.

The grand table was laden with roasted chicken, fresh buttermilk biscuits, warm berry cobbler, and bowls of fresh fruit.

Sitting around the table were eight-year-old triplets Mason, Michael, and Madison, eight-year-old Daisy, and sitting happily in a wooden high chair, our one-year-old baby boy, Noah.

The room was filled with the sweet music of children’s laughter, teasing, and joy.

I sat beside Ethan at the head of the table, holding his warm hand in mine, feeling the solid weight of our wedding bands touching.

I looked down at the gleaming marble floors, remembering that stormy morning when toys flew across the room, cereal covered the floor, and twelve women before me had surrendered.

I had walked through those gates carrying eighty-four thousand dollars in debt and an ocean of fear for my daughter's survival.

I had never known that patience, courage, and a simple bowl of warm homemade food could conquer the deepest grief, dismantle every enemy, and build an unbreakable empire of love.

Ethan leaned over, pressing a tender, lingering kiss against my cheek as the children clinked their glasses of apple cider in a joyful family toast.

The storms of the past had vanished forever into the horizon. In their place stood an eternal, magnificent dawn—and our family was finally, gloriously whole.
