THE FORTRESS ON THE CLIFF / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9 - Reckoning at the High-RiseBefore Vance could raise the gun, Caleb launched himself across the mahogany table.

He caught Vance’s wrist, twisting it sharply until the weapon clattered to the floor, and slammed the corrupt CEO face-first onto the polished wood.

At the same moment, Captain Vance raised his rifle toward Victoria. But Victoria didn't shrink away. She grabbed a heavy bronze statue from a side table and swung it with all her strength, striking the mercenary captain across the temple and sending him crashing into the glass wall.

Luke kicked his chair over, sweeping the legs of the remaining guard as federal tactical teams suddenly burst through the outer doors, sirens wailing from the street sixty floors below.

“FBI! Don't move! Hands in the air!” federal agents bellowed, swarming the room with weapons drawn.

Harrison Vance was pinned to the desk by Caleb, his face red with humiliation and rage as federal agents handcuffed him.

“It’s over, Vance,” Caleb said quietly, stepping back and pulling his brother to his feet.

As the federal authorities secured the room and arrested every executive present, Victoria walked over to Caleb.

Her hands were shaking slightly from the adrenaline, but her smile was radiant. “We did it.”

Caleb looked down at her, the tension finally leaving his broad shoulders. He reached out, pulling her into a fierce, protective embrace right there in the middle of the chaotic boardroom.

Victoria buried her face in his shoulder, holding him tight, feeling the steady, comforting beat of his heart.

“Thank you, Caleb,” she whispered against his neck.

“No,” Caleb murmured, kissing the top of her head. “Thank you for coming to my door.”
