Chapter 1 - The Storm and the StrangerThe wind came off the Pacific like a fist. It slammed into the cliffside hard enough to rattle the reinforced windows, turning the night beyond them into a blur of rain, salt, and black water. Caleb Ward stood in the control room of his cliffside fortress and watched the security monitors flicker between camera feeds.

Perimeter. Driveway. Outer gate. Lower access road.
Every screen showed empty. Every screen showed safe. Caleb did not believe any of them.
Three years had passed since cancer stole his wife, leaving him alone to raise six-year-old Emma. A former elite military contractor, Caleb had used his fortune to construct a concrete-and-glass stronghold twelve miles from the nearest neighbor. Behind bullet-resistant glass, thermal sensors, and a secret cliffside escape tunnel he had spent two years digging by hand, he kept his daughter isolated from a dangerous world.
Then, at 2:00 AM, a black SUV crashed through his outer security gates.
Falling out of the vehicle was Victoria Hail—a thirty-year-old tech billionaire, former CFO of Apex Global, and the subject of a nationwide manhunt. Media outlets claimed she was a mentally unstable embezzlement fugitive, but as Caleb dragged her bleeding body inside his front door, the truth became clear.
“Twelve men,” Victoria gasped, clutching a gunshot wound in her side as rain and blood pooled on the entry tile. “Professional mercenaries. They want me dead... and now they know where you are.”

Outside, three tactical SUVs lined up across the circular driveway. Through the external microphones, a cold voice crackled over a radio: “Confirm two targets. Primary is Victoria Hail. Secondary is Caleb Ward. Eliminate both and retrieve the drive.”
Caleb looked from the security monitor to Victoria’s pale, determined face, then toward the safe room where little Emma was waiting. The peaceful, isolated world he had built to protect his daughter had just become a battlefield.
