THE FORTRESS ON THE CLIFF / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6 - The Enemy UnmaskedCaleb’s eyes turned to cold steel as he lowered the phone.

“What is it?” Victoria asked, her posture immediately tensing.

“Harrison Vance has my brother,” Caleb said grittily. “He’s using him as leverage to force a exchange.”

“It’s a trap, Caleb!” Victoria insisted, grabbing his arm. “The moment you step onto the executive floor of Apex Tower, they will execute all of us and destroy the evidence!”

“I know,” Caleb said calmly. He walked over to the closet, pulled out a heavy black tactical duffel bag, and unzipped it. Inside lay advanced electronic jamming gear, encrypted radio transceivers, and high-caliber weaponry. “Which is why we aren't going there to negotiate.”

Victoria looked at the gear, then at Caleb’s cold, focused expression. “What are you going to do?”

“I spent ten years dismantling hostile organizations in foreign territories, Victoria,” Caleb said, loading magazines with deliberate, practiced speed. “Vance thinks he’s dealing with a retired guard. He doesn't realize he just invited a war into his living room.”

Within an hour, Caleb had coordinated with his most trusted military contact, Marcus, who arrived at the apartment to secure Emma.

Emma hugged her father tightly before he left. “Be careful, Daddy. Bring Victoria back.”

Caleb kissed his daughter’s forehead. “I promise, sweetheart.”

He turned to Victoria, holding out a dark trench coat. “You’re coming with me.”

Victoria raised an eyebrow. “To the lion’s den?”

“You hold the encryption key to that drive,” Caleb said, offering a small, confident smirk. “And besides... I’m not letting you out of my sight.”
