THE FORTRESS ON THE CLIFF / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4 - Shadows in the SafehouseBy 5:00 AM, the storm began to subside into a gray, misty drizzle.

Caleb navigated the tactical boat into a private marina twenty miles down the coast—a location registered to an old military contact who owed him his life. He transferred Victoria and Emma into a clean, unmarked sedan parked in an underground garage and drove them to a high-rise luxury apartment in downtown San Francisco.

The apartment belonged to Caleb, funded through an offshore account he hadn't touched in five years.

Inside the quiet apartment, Caleb laid Victoria down on the bed, pulled out a field surgical kit, and went to work.

“This is going to hurt,” Caleb warned softly, sanitizing his hands.

Victoria gritted her teeth, sweating profusely. “Do it.”

For forty-five minutes, Caleb worked with surgical precision, removing the bullet from her flank, cleaning the wound, and stitching the torn tissue. Victoria didn't scream once; she gripped the bedsheets, her knuckles white, enduring the agony with a terrifying strength of will.

Emma sat quietly in the living room, watching television with the volume low, occasionally peeking through the cracked bedroom door.

When the dressing was secured, Victoria leaned back against the plush pillows, breathing heavily. Her blonde hair was damp, her face pale, yet there was a striking elegance to her that even pain couldn't strip away.

“Thank you, Caleb,” she murmured, looking up at him.

Caleb sat on the edge of the mattress, wiping his hands with a towel. “Now talk. Who is really after you?”

Victoria took a slow breath. “Apex Global isn't just a tech conglomerate. It’s a front for an international money-laundering syndicate called Solstice. They use disaster relief funds, offshore tech acquisitions, and private military contractors to move billions for corrupt politicians, cartel leaders, and intelligence executives.”

She pointed to the silver flash drive resting on the nightstand.

“That drive contains every transaction, every bank account, and every name—including the CEO of Apex, Harrison Vance, and three sitting US senators. I uncovered it during an audit. When they realized I knew, they framed me for embezzlement and sent their private security team to eliminate me.”

Caleb stared at the drive. “You hold the bomb that could destroy fifty of the most powerful people in the world.”

“Yes,” Victoria said softly, turning her eyes to meet his. “And last night, I brought that bomb right into your life.”
