Chapter 7 - The DNA TruthThe cathedral went deathly, terrifyingly silent.

Four hundred people stared in complete, utter shock at the flesh-colored silicone belly lying on the polished floor between Grant and Celeste.
Celeste lay on the marble floor in her torn dress, her real waist completely flat, her face buried in her hands as she began to sob hysterically.
Vivianâs eyes bulged out of her head. She looked at the fake belly on the floor, then at Celeste, then at Grant.
âWhat... what is that...?!â Vivian shrieked, her voice cracking into a high-pitched scream. âWhat is that on the floor?!â
Grant dropped to his knees, staring at the silicone rubber object as if it were a venomous snake. He reached out with a shaking hand, touching the synthetic material, then looked up at Celeste with wild, bloodshot eyes.
âYou... you aren't pregnant...?â Grant whispered, his voice breaking completely. âYou... you made this up?!â
âI did it for us, Grant!â Celeste wailed from the floor, crawling away from him. âYour mother wouldn't let you marry me unless I was carrying a boy! I was going to pretend to miscarry next month!â
Vivian let out a strangled gasp, grabbing her chest as if she were having a heart attack. âYou lied to me?! You lied about my grandson?!â
I walked up to Grant, holding three-month-old Lily in my arm.
Lily looked down at her father with big, bright brown eyes, completely innocent of the madness around her.
âYou threw away your real daughterâyour flesh and bloodâfor a piece of rubber, Grant,â I said, my voice dropping into a cold, unshakable register that echoed through the silent church. âYou called her useless. But she is the only legitimate heir you will ever have.â
Grant looked up at me from his knees, tears streaming down his face, his body shaking violently with humiliation and regret.
âHannah... please...â Grant whimpered, reaching out a trembling hand toward Lilyâs blanket. âHannah, Iâm sorry... I didn't know... please, let me hold her...â

I took a step backward, pulling my daughter safely out of his reach.
âDon't touch her,â I said coldly. âYou lost the right to hold her the second you threw those divorce papers in my face.â
