Chapter 3 - Building the Legal WallFor the next three weeks, while Grant and Vivian were busy ordering thousand-dollar floral arrangements and issuing press releases about their grand wedding, Daniel and I quietly dismantled Grant’s life piece by piece behind closed doors.

First, we contacted the chief investment officer at First National Bank—the bank holding the five-million-dollar loan application.

When Daniel presented the certified irrevocable trust documents proving that the lake estate belonged exclusively to my family, alongside a forensic handwriting report showing my signature was forged, the bank manager’s face turned gray.

“Mr. Mercer,” the bank manager stammered, looking at Daniel. “Grant Mercer told us his wife had verbally authorized this transfer!”

“His wife was in a hospital bed recovering from a delivery,” Daniel stated coldly. “If you process a single dollar of that loan, First National will be named as a co-conspirator in a federal bank fraud lawsuit.”

The bank manager immediately flagged Grant’s loan application for criminal review, placing a silent fraud hold on his corporate accounts.

Second, we hired a private investigator named Marcus to look into Celeste’s background.

What Marcus found in less than forty-eight hours was staggering.

Celeste wasn't just an ambitious assistant; she was thirty thousand dollars in debt from failed luxury investments. More importantly, two months before she claimed to have conceived Grant’s baby boy, she had purchased a professional silicone prosthetic pregnancy belly online using her corporate credit card.

Marcus handed me the digital receipts and high-resolution photographs taken outside a local boutique.

“She’s not even pregnant, Hannah,” Marcus revealed, setting a photo on the table. “She’s been wearing progressive silicone bellies for three months. She planned to 'suffer an unfortunate medical miscarriage' two weeks after the wedding, right after securing her financial settlement in the marriage contract.”

I stared at the photograph of the silicone prosthetic belly in disbelief.

The level of deception was beyond anything I had imagined. Vivian had demanded a grandson so desperately that she had accepted Celeste’s lie without asking for a single doctor’s report. And Grant was so desperate to escape a daughter that he had handed over his life to a woman wearing rubber under her dress.

“Do we expose her now?” Marcus asked.

I looked at the invitation sitting on my desk—a gold-embossed card inviting high society to The Wedding of Grant Mercer & Celeste Vance.

“No,” I said, my voice dropping into ice. “We let her wear the belly to the altar.”
