Chapter 10 - A Legacy CleanedOne year after that fateful day at the cathedral.

The morning sun rose golden and warm over the grounds of my family’s lake estate. The water glistened like diamonds, and the air smelled of blooming jasmine and fresh pine.

The house, which Grant had tried so desperately to steal and use as collateral for his fake empire, had been completely restored and filled with warmth and light.

On the wide wooden lawn, fifteen small children were playing happily under the shade of the oak trees, their laughter echoing across the water.

We were celebrating Lily’s first birthday.

I stood on the wraparound porch wearing a simple, beautiful yellow summer dress, holding a cup of tea. Beside me stood my brother Daniel, watching Lily as she took her first clumsy, joyful steps across the soft green grass toward my mother.

“Look at her go, Hannah,” Daniel smiled, wrapping his arm around my shoulders. “She’s got your strength.”

“She’s got our family’s strength,” I corrected softly, watching my daughter laugh as my mother picked her up and swung her in the air.

Through court-ordered restitution and the liquidation of Grant’s former assets, my family established the Lily Mercer Foundation for Single Mothers—a multi-million-dollar non-profit organization providing legal protection, housing support, and medical care for women facing financial abuse and abandoned mothers across the state.

Grant was currently serving an eight-year sentence in a state correctional facility, while Vivian received five years for felony forgery and perjury. Celeste was ordered to pay restitution for fraud and spent six months in county detention.

Their greedy, pathetic world had vanished into thin air, leaving behind only the truth.

I walked down the porch steps, taking Lily into my arms, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead. Her dark brown eyes sparkled with bright, pure happiness, untouched by the darkness of the past.

“Happy birthday, my sweet girl,” I whispered into her hair.

The morning sun rose higher into the clear blue sky, casting warm, golden light over a home built on unconditional love, truth, and a mother’s unyielding protection—a legacy that no lie could ever break.
