Chapter 5 - The Shadow at the WindowMaren stood in the doorway, watching her ex-billionaire husband weeping at her feet in the mud.

She didn't reach out to comfort him. She didn't offer him a towel. For eleven months, she had wept alone in emergency rooms, worked twelve-hour shifts at a local diner while carrying twins, and sold scrap metal to pay for infant formula, while his family dragged her name through the mud.

“Get up, Rowan,” Maren said quietly, her tone flat and devoid of emotion. “You’ll ruin your suit.”

“I found the original investigator files, Maren,” Rowan choked out, looking up at her with red, bloodshot eyes. “I found the hotel receipts... the fake photos... Denise Alvarez’s statement... and the birth certificates for Henry and Luke.”

Maren’s hand tightened slightly around baby Luke. Her face went pale, but her chin stayed held high.

“They are my sons, Rowan,” Maren declared, her voice firm as granite. “You threw me out when they were just heartbeat dots on a sonogram. You lost the right to call them yours the night you locked the door.”

“I was a fool, Maren!” Rowan wept, standing up, taking a cautious step toward the threshold, keeping his hands open. “I was blind! I let my pride and Tessa’s lies blind me to the only woman who ever truly loved me!”

“You didn't just believe a lie, Rowan,” Maren said, a single, hot tear finally slipping down her cheek. “You wanted to believe it. Because believing I was a thief was easier than protecting me against your mother and Tessa.”

She looked at him with that same devastating pity he had seen on Old Hillsboro Road.

“Go home, Rowan,” Maren whispered softly. “Go back to Belle Meade. Marry Tessa. Leave us in the dust where you put us.”

Before Rowan could respond, the headlights of a second car shone through the rain at the bottom of the driveway—a black sedan belonging to Tessa’s private security detail.
