Chapter 3 - The Birth CertificatesRowan stood frozen in the dim office, his breathing ragged, his hands shaking violently as the terrifying reality of what he had done washed over his soul.

He had thrown his innocent wife out onto the street. He had destroyed her reputation, stripped her of her home, allowed his mother to call her a thief, and forced her into absolute poverty... all based on a cruel, calculated trap orchestrated by the woman he was about to marry!
Then, at the bottom of the third box, Rowan found a folder marked: BELLE MEADE HOSPITAL â CONFIDENTIAL MEDICAL EMERGENCY.
Maren had been admitted to the emergency room nine days after Rowan threw her out.
She had been found collapsed at a bus station in the rain, suffering from severe dehydration, physical trauma, and advanced complications of a high-risk twin pregnancy.
Tucked behind the emergency admission chart were two official Tennessee Birth Certificates:
CHILD 1: Henry James Bellamy
CHILD 2: Luke Andrew Bellamy
MOTHER: Maren Ward Bellamy
FATHER: Rowan James Bellamy
Rowan fell back into a leather chair, the white birth certificates fluttering in his hands, tears of pure, agonizing horror spilling down his face.
The twins he had seen on Old Hillsboro Road... were his sons.
Maren had been carrying his twin boys when he locked her out of their home. For nearly a year, his sons had been living in poverty, sleeping in a carrier while their mother picked up aluminum cans to buy milk, while Rowan lived in a Belle Meade mansion with the monster who had destroyed their lives.
Ray Mercer stood in the corner of the office, trembling. âRowan... please... I can explain... Tessa paid me two hundred thousand dollars... I had debtsââ

Rowan stood up slowly, lifting his eyes to Rayâeyes filled with an absolute, terrifying coldness that made the investigator step back in fear.
âStart with why I should let you finish that sentence,â Rowan whispered softly.
