Chapter 7 - The Village Elders' BetrayalThe metallic click-clack of heavy steel handcuffs snapping around Tobenna’s wrists echoed across the paved street.

“Ada! Please! Don't let them take me!” Tobenna screamed frantically as officers forced him into the back of the patrol car. “I’ll give you money! I’ll give you half the stores!”

“My son’s childhood wasn't for sale, Tobenna,” I said coldly, turning my back on him.

By noon, federal bank auditors and police investigators descended upon our old village of Oji.

Kingsley Okafor was arrested at his luxurious home, along with two village elders who had signed forged death affidavits in exchange for ten-thousand-dollar bribes.

When the police led Kingsley out of his house in chains, the entire village gathered on the dirt road, screaming in outrage as the truth of their eight-year deception was exposed.

Ifeoma—Tobenna’s second wife—was completely innocent of the crime. When she learned the full extent of Tobenna’s lies, she immediately filed for annulment, froze their joint commercial accounts, and handed over all financial records to the state prosecutor.

“I am so sorry, Ada,” Ifeoma wept when we met at the police station. “I had no idea I was living with a monster.”

“You were his second victim, Ifeoma,” I replied softly, taking her hands. “We both deserve the truth.”
