Chapter 3 - The Photo on the PhoneStanding on the screen, holding a glass of champagne beside a gorgeous woman in a silk dress, was Tobenna.

He was older, fuller in the face, dressed in a tailored navy blue suit, smiling with the unbothered confidence of a man who had never known a day of grief.

My hands went numb. The room seemed to tilt on its axis.

“Who... who is that man?” I whispered, my voice trembling so violently Amara looked at me in shock.

“That’s Chidi,” Amara replied, smiling warmly. “Chidi Nwafor. He’s my cousin’s husband. They’ve been married for six years. They own a chain of boutique stores in Enugu now.”

“Chidi Nwafor...” I repeated, the fake name tasting like ash in my mouth.

I knew that face better than my own reflection. I knew the tiny crescent scar above his left eyebrow from a childhood fall. I knew the exact way he held his left hand when he was nervous. I knew the smile he used when he wanted people to trust him.

He hadn't drowned. He hadn't been swept away by the river.

He had walked away from his twenty-four-year-old wife and his eight-month-old baby, leaving us to starve in poverty while he built a new, luxurious life forty miles away under a stolen name.
