âHe was married to me,â I said, my eyes fixed on the traitor before me. âAnd he staged his death.â
Tobenna grabbed his head in his hands, collapsing onto a chair outside his shop, weeping tears of pure panic and humiliation.
âAda... you don't understand!â Tobenna whimpered desperately. âI had to do it! I owed debt to dangerous men! Kingsley told me it was the only way!â
âKingsley?â I froze, a sudden, horrifying realization hitting me.
At that moment, two officers from the Enugu State Police Commandâwhom I had called from the bus station after showing them my original marriage certificate and his death declarationâpulled up in a patrol car.
A senior detective stepped out, holding a thick legal folder.
âTobenna Okafor, also known as Chidi Nwafor,â the detective announced calmly. âYou are under arrest for identity fraud, bigamy, and conspiracy to commit major insurance fraud.â
Ifeoma gasped aloud. âINSURANCE FRAUD?!â
The detective turned to me. âMrs. Okafor, three weeks after your husband's 'drowning' in 2018, his brother Kingsley Okafor collected a two-hundred-thousand-dollar life insurance payout from Sovereign Trust Bank.â
