The Colonel's Wrath / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6 - A Mother-In-Law’s DesperationInside the cold, gray walls of the King County Jail, Evelyn Vance sat in a orange jumpsuit, her once-perfect blonde hair messy and unkempt, her hands shaking as she held the visitor's phone.

Across the thick glass partition sat her younger sister, Beatrice, who looked terrified.

"Beatrice, you have to help me!" Evelyn hissed, her voice cracking with desperation. "They’ve frozen all my accounts. I can't even afford a private lawyer. They’re going to give me a public defender!"

"Evelyn, the news is everywhere," Beatrice whispered, looking around the visiting room nervously. "They played the audio of Grant on the local TV station. Everyone knows what you two did to Claire. The neighbors are horrified. Nobody wants to be associated with us."

"Claire is a lying little bitch!" Evelyn snarled, slamming her hand against the glass. "She set us up! She’s been planning this for months! You have to find Daniel. Tell him we’ll sign over the Oregon properties, tell him we’ll give them the house—just make him drop the charges!"

"Daniel Mercer is a U.S. Army colonel, Evelyn," Beatrice said, her voice filled with pity. "He’s not interested in your money. He’s interested in justice. He’s going to make sure you and Grant spend the rest of your lives behind bars."

"No!" Evelyn shrieked as the guard grabbed her arm, pulling her back from the glass. "This is a mistake! I’m a respectable woman! I’m an officer’s mother!"

As Evelyn was dragged back to her cell, her screams of outrage echoing down the concrete corridor, her sister stood up and walked away, leaving her to face the cold, hard reality of her greed.
