The Colonel's Wrath / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4 - The Broken ShieldThe news of Captain Grant Vance’s arrest sent shockwaves through his battalion. He had always been the golden boy—the officer destined for rapid promotion, the man who lectured younger soldiers on honor, discipline, and family values.

Now, he sat in a gray, windowless interrogation room at the military police headquarters, his uniform stripped of its rank insignias, his face haggard and unshaven. Across the table sat my father and Lieutenant Colonel Marcus.

"This is a setup," Grant sneered, leaning back in his chair, trying to project a confidence he didn't feel. "Claire is unstable. She’s been fabricating these stories because she’s jealous of my career. And you, Colonel, are using your position to conduct a personal vendetta against me."

My father did not flinch. He placed a small digital recorder on the table and pressed play.

The speaker crackled, and then Grant’s voice filled the cold room, loud and terrifyingly clear.

"You are going to sit there and you are going to smile for the camera, Claire. If you say one word to your father about the bruises, I will make sure the state takes this baby the second it’s born. You are nothing without me. Do you understand? Nothing."

Then came the sound of a heavy slap, followed by my quiet, desperate sobbing.

Grant's smug expression completely shattered. He stared at the recorder, his mouth hanging open, his face turning an ash-gray color.

"The voice-activated recorder was hidden inside her pillow, Captain," Marcus said, his voice cold and precise. "Along with forty-eight hours of high-definition video surveillance from the kitchen cameras that you thought were disconnected. We have you on tape hitting her, shoving her, and locking her in the pantry."

"No... no, that's not..." Grant stammered, looking frantically at the door. "That was... we were having an argument. She was hysterical. I was trying to restrain her."

"You are going to prison, Grant," my father said, leaning across the table, his gray eyes burning with a terrifying intensity. "Not just for what you did to my daughter. But for the financial fraud, the embezzlement, and the treasonous distribution of military logistics data. Your shield is broken."
