The Colonel's Wrath / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 2 - The House Built on SandWithin twenty minutes, the quiet, upscale suburban street was filled with the flashing red and blue lights of local police cruisers. But they weren't the only ones who arrived. Two dark SUVs marked with military police insignias pulled up behind them, carrying a specialized family-advocacy liaison team that my father had summoned with a single, high-priority phone call.

Grant stood in the living room, his hands trembling slightly as he tried to explain himself to the local police officers. "This is a massive misunderstanding, officers. My wife has been struggling with severe prenatal depression. She’s been self-harming, and we’ve been trying to keep her from hurting herself or the baby."

"He's telling the truth," Evelyn chimed in, her voice dripping with maternal concern. "We have medical records showing her psychological instability. She’s completely unhinged."

Upstairs, my father was gently wrapping a warm wool coat around my shoulders. He looked down at the bruises on my legs and arms, his expression a mixture of profound grief and absolute, cold fury.

"I'm carrying you out of here, Claire," he whispered. "You are never stepping foot in this house with them again."

"Dad, the baby..." I murmured, clutching my stomach. "The stress... I felt like I was losing my mind."

"You're safe now," he said, his voice softening as he carefully lifted me into his arms.

As my father carried me down the grand spiral staircase, the officers in the living room fell silent. Grant turned, his eyes widening in horror as he saw me cradled in my father's arms, my heavily bruised legs fully exposed to the police officers and the military liaisons.

"Daniel, put her down!" Grant yelled, taking a step toward us. "You can't just take my wife!"

A tall, burly military police officer stepped directly into Grant's path, his hand resting on his utility belt. "Captain Vance, step back. Do not approach the victim."

"She’s my wife!" Grant screamed, his composure completely shattering. "This is a domestic matter! You have no jurisdiction here!"

"Actually, Captain, we do," the military liaison said, holding up a digital tablet. "We have just received a formal, high-priority report filed by Colonel Mercer of the Inspector General's office, detailing physical abuse, financial coercion, and unlawful confinement of a dependent. Under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, you are being placed under immediate military protective custody pending a full investigation."

Evelyn gasped, clutching her chest. "This is a conspiracy! You can't arrest my son! He's an officer!"

"Ma'am, sit down and be quiet," the local police officer said, pulling out a pair of handcuffs. "As for you, Mrs. Vance, we have a warrant for your arrest as an accessory to domestic abuse and unlawful confinement."

I closed my eyes, leaning my head against my father's shoulder as he carried me out the front door, away from the screaming, the flashing lights, and the house that had been my prison for six months. The cool night air felt incredibly clean. The house built on sand was finally washing away.
