Chapter 8 - The Shadow FleetThe Gulfstream coasted at 43,000 feet over the dark expanse of the Pacific Ocean. Night had completely swallowed the horizon, leaving only the stars above and an infinite abyss below.

Daniel tapped away at his laptop, cross-referencing military naval logs from twelve years ago with the coordinates found in the file.
“Look at this,” Daniel said, turning the screen toward me. “On the night Ethan went down, there was a black-budget naval exercise occurring forty miles south of his vector. Codenamed Operation Trident Watch.”
“Who was in command of Trident Watch?” I asked.
“Vance was the air coordinator,” Daniel said. “But the naval surface commander was Admiral Thomas Sterling—head of Special Warfare Command. They weren't testing new planes, Sarah. They were testing automated underwater assets that could hijack the control frequencies of surface ships and aircraft.”
The puzzle pieces were beginning to lock together in a terrifying picture. The equipment tested that night wasn't an enemy weapon—it was a black project designed within our own defense industry, an off-the-books system capable of remote-controlling or disabling any modern aircraft using digital fly-by-wire architecture.
“Ethan accidentally stumbled into the live-fire zone of a black asset,” I realized aloud. “He saw the signal array being deployed from a covert aircraft. When he tried to report it, Vance tried to remotely disable his F-22 to force him down.”
“Except Ethan was too good of a pilot,” Daniel said, his eyes burning with quiet fury. “He fought the system manually, just like you fought that Boeing today. So Vance gave the command to cut his telemetry and let him burn out over the ocean.”

“And today,” I added, “the same software was used to lock my spoiler. Because Vance realized I was looking into the paper trail of the contractor who built that system.”
Suddenly, the Gulfstream pitched violently to the left. The cabin lights flickered, turned red, and the master caution chime began to chime loudly from the cockpit.
