Chapter 11 - The Dead Zone“They found us over international waters,” Daniel said, staring out into the dark night. “That means they aren't using civilian FAA radar to track us. They’re using a satellite or a naval vessel positioned along the coast.”

“Is there any surface radar painted on our tail?” I asked Marcus.

“Can’t tell,” Marcus replied grimly. “Our radar warning receivers went down when Daniel pulled the flight control breakers. We are completely deaf and blind to military targeting.”

“Keep us at ten thousand feet,” I said, making a decision. “Divert from Oahu. If Vance expects us to head to Hickam Air Force Base, he’ll have his assets watching the Hawaiian airspace entry corridors.”

“Where are we going then?” Marcus asked, adjusting the manual throttle levers.

“Midway Atoll,” I said. “It’s an old naval air facility with an unmonitored emergency strip. It’s barely maintained, but the runway is long enough for a Gulfstream, and there are no military installations left there to report our landing.”

“Midway is another four hundred miles,” Marcus pointed out, checking the mechanical fuel gauges. “On lower altitude and manual mixture, we’ll be landing on fumes.”

“Then we glide in if we have to,” Daniel said. “Because if we land at any official air base now, Vance will have us taken into military custody before our boots hit the tarmac.”

I looked out at the vast, pitch-black ocean below. Somewhere out there, hidden beneath the waves or lurking in the clouds, was the origin of the signal that had killed my best friend. And now, we were flying straight into the dark toward a deserted island in the middle of nowhere.
