The Boiling Point / Chapter 1 / 20

Chapter 1 - The Kitchen AccidentThe kitchen was filled with the heavy steam of boiling water and the sharp aroma of cooking pasta. Seven-year-old Lily stood tiptoeing near the edge of the stove, desperate to be helpful after a long day at school. Her small hands reached out to adjust the pot, but a sudden slip sent hot water splashing across the back of her hand.

A piercing scream echoed through the house. Lily clutched her burning hand to her chest, tears streaming uncontrollably down her flushed face as the searing pain took over.

Before anyone else could move, heavy footsteps thundered into the kitchen. Helen, her grandmother, pushed past the counter with a stern, unforgiving glare. Instead of offering comfort, Helen pointed an accusing finger at the trembling child, her voice cutting through the cries like a whip. "You clumsy little brat! Look what you've done! Get that away from here!" Lily sobbed harder, holding up her red, blistered skin. "My hand... it burns!"
