Chapter 8 - Cracks in the Arrogant SonThree months after the driveway arrest, Daniel sat in a federal detention facility awaiting trial.

Stripped of his mother’s retirement funds and facing total financial ruin, Daniel sent frantic letters through his public defender, begging me to drop the criminal charges and sign a bail agreement.

Abigail and I visited him once in the detention facility visiting room.

Daniel sat behind the glass partition in an orange jumpsuit, his hair messy, his face hollow, looking like a shell of the confident man who had thrown my suitcase at my feet three months ago.

“Mom... please,” Daniel wept, pressing his trembling hands against the glass. “I made a mistake! I was desperate! Melissa pushed me to do it!”

“You didn't make a mistake, Daniel,” I replied, my voice calm, peaceful, and entirely unbothered. “You made a choice. You thought I was weak because I was old. But a mother’s love does not mean allowing you to destroy my life.”

I stood up, adjusted my coat, and walked away with my daughter, leaving his cries behind the locked steel doors.
