Chapter 4 - The Voice on the TapeDaniel’s face turned an ugly, mottled red. “I paid the mortgage for the last five years!”

“You paid the mortgage using funds transferred directly from your mother’s retirement annuity account,” Arthur corrected, pulling out bank ledger sheets. “Transfers you executed by forging her signature while she was recovering from knee surgery last winter.”

“That’s a lie!” Melissa shrieked. “She gave us permission!”

I reached into my pocket, pulled out the small black voice recorder I had packed in my suitcase, and pressed play.

Daniel’s voice blasted through the speaker, crisp and clear:

“Once we get her into Silver Pines, the state will declare her incompetent. We sign the deed over to our shell company by Friday, liquidate her remaining stocks, and no one can stop us.”

Melissa gasped, clutching her throat in absolute horror!

Daniel stared at the small black device in my hand as if it were a venomous snake. He had forgotten that three nights ago, during his loud argument with Melissa in the kitchen, I had left the recorder running beneath the microwave.
