Chapter 7 - The Safehouse Breach

While Vincent prepared for his midnight strike against Carmine Vitale, the Vitale family’s intelligence network had not been entirely dormant. An anonymous tip from a corrupt hospital worker who had noticed unusual medical supplies being delivered to Vincent’s private district had tipped off Carmine’s most dangerous enforcer, a ruthless killer named Victor Vance. Victor led a four-man hit squad through the freezing rain toward the unmarked medical safehouse where Elena was recovering. They arrived silently at 1:15 AM, bypassing the perimeter security sensors using sophisticated military-grade frequency jammers. Inside the safehouse, two of Vincent’s elite guards stood watch in the ground-floor hallway, completely unaware of the silent intrusion until the heavy steel back door blew open with a deafening crash of a breaching charge. “Contact! Breach in the rear!” the lead guard shouted over his radio just before two suppressed gunshots echoed through the stairwell, silencing them instantly. Upstairs in the medical suite, the sudden commotion jolted Elena awake. Her heart hammered against her ribs as she heard heavy combat boots storming up the wooden stairs toward her door. Panic clawed at her throat, but she remembered Vincent’s words: You are safe. Pulling the heavy blankets over her swollen belly, she slid silently off the mattress and hid behind the reinforced partition wall of the private bathroom, holding her breath. The door to the medical suite splintered open as Victor Vance kicked it off its hinges, stepping into the room with an automatic rifle raised, his eyes scanning the empty bed. “She was here! Search the rooms! Find the brat!” Victor barked to his remaining enforcers. Before the thugs could fan out across the suite, the overhead lights suddenly snapped off, plunging the room into absolute darkness. From the shadows of the doorway, a single, cold voice cut through the silence like a butcher’s knife. “You’re looking in the wrong place, Victor.” Victor spun around, but before he could raise his weapon, a heavy-caliber bullet shattered his kneecap, dropping him to the floor with a shrieking agony. Within twenty seconds, the entire hit squad was neutralized by Vincent and his reinforcements, who had arrived just in time to intercept the breach. Vincent stepped over Victor’s writhing body, walking calmly to the bathroom door and gently pushing it open. He reached down, extending his hand to help a trembling Elena back to her feet. “It’s over,” Vincent whispered, pulling her safely against his chest. “They’re gone.”
