Chapter 6 - A Promise in the Dark

When Vincent pushed open the door to the medical suite, Elena was awake, propped up against the pillows, staring out the reinforced window at the distant, glittering skyline of Manhattan under the midnight sky. She turned her head as he entered, her green eyes reflecting the soft amber light of the bedside lamp. “You shouldn't be standing out there planning wars, Vincent,” she said softly, her voice carrying a maternal weariness. “You need to rest.” Vincent walked over, pulling the armchair close to the mattress and sitting down. He took her small, frail hand in his, rubbing his thumb gently across her knuckles. “I’ve rested for seven months while believing you were gone, Elena. Now it’s time to settle accounts,” Vincent replied, his tone firm yet infinitely tender when addressing her. “Marcus Cole confessed. The men who hunted you down are already paying for what they did.” Elena squeezed his hand tightly, a shudder running through her shoulders. “I was so scared, Vincent. Every time I heard footsteps outside a shelter, every time I saw a black car pass by on the street, I thought they had found me. I didn't want our baby to grow up hiding in the dark.” Vincent leaned forward, pressing a soft, lingering kiss against the back of her hand. “Listen to me, Elena. Look at me,” he commanded gently until her green eyes locked onto his. “I swear to you on the memory of my mother, and on the life of this child inside you—by tomorrow sunrise, Carmine Vitale will no longer have the power to cast a shadow over this city. You and our baby will walk out into the sunlight as free as anyone in this world. No more hiding. No more fear.” Elena studied his face, seeing the absolute, unshakable truth in his eyes. The last lingering shreds of her terror finally melted away, replaced by a profound, overwhelming sense of safety. She reached out with her free hand, cupping his stubble-shadowed cheek. “Just promise me one thing, Vincent,” she whispered. “Don’t let this city swallow you whole. Come back to us.” “Always,” Vincent vowed, sealing the promise with a gentle kiss to her forehead.
