Chapter 14 - Healing Old Scars

Spring returned to New York with a brilliant explosion of blooming dogwoods, emerald lawns, and warm sunlight washing over the stone terraces of the Westchester estate. One year after that rainy night in the Bronx alleyway where Vincent had stopped a brutal beating, the family gathered on the manicured lawn to celebrate Maya’s first birthday. Elena walked along the stone path holding little Maya’s hand as the toddler took her first brave, wobbly steps across the grass, laughing and clapping her hands with pure delight. Vincent sat on a white wooden bench nearby, watching his wife and daughter with an expression of profound, unshakeable peace. The scars on his knuckles from that rainy night had long since faded, but the memory remained as a reminder of what truly mattered. Elena walked over, sitting beside him on the bench, leaning her head comfortably against his shoulder. “What are you thinking about, Vincent?” she asked softly. Vincent wrapped his arm around her, pulling her close, and kissed the top of her dark hair. “I was just thinking,” he murmured, “that out of all the battles I ever fought in this city, finding you in that alley was the only one that truly mattered.”
