Chapter 5 - Whispers of War

The interrogation in the basement did not take long. Under the quiet, persuasive pressure of Vincent’s enforcers, Marcus Cole confessed to every detail of the conspiracy: the forged coroner reports, the bribed dental records, and the direct orders issued by Carmine Vitale himself, who had hoped that breaking Vincent’s heart would make his criminal empire easy to dismantle. But Carmine had drastically miscalculated. Instead of a broken, grieving boss vulnerable to attack, he had accidentally preserved the one thing that could drive Vincent Rossi to commit absolute, unmitigated destruction: his family. With Cole securely locked away in a soundless holding cell beneath the warehouse, Dominic laid out a comprehensive map of Manhattan and the Bronx across the central table of the command center. “Carmine’s primary revenue streams are split across three major shipping docks in Brooklyn, two illegal gambling dens in Queens, and his main corporate front office in midtown Manhattan,” Dominic explained, tapping a red marker against the map. “If we strike all three simultaneously, his organization will collapse within twenty-four hours before he even realizes what hit him.” Vincent stood at the head of the table, his arms crossed over his charcoal vest, staring down at the map with cold, analytical focus. The pain of the past seven months had completely crystallized into pure tactical resolve. “No,” Vincent corrected quietly. “We don’t hit everything at once. That’s how you start a messy street war that catches civilians in the crossfire.” He reached out, taking the red marker and drawing a bold circle around Carmine’s midtown corporate headquarters. “We cut off the head first. We take Carmine himself, dismantle his inner circle, and let his soldiers know that serving the Vitale name is a death sentence. Leave the docks for last; let them panic in the dark.” Dominic nodded slowly, a grim smile touching his mouth. “It will be done, Boss. The strike teams are arming now. We move at midnight.” As Dominic turned to rally the troops, Vincent walked back toward the medical suite upstairs. He paused outside the heavy oak door, listening to the soft, rhythmic breathing coming from inside. He knew the coming hours would plunge New York into a violent storm of blood and fire, but for the first time in seven months, he felt truly alive—because he was fighting for the future of his son or daughter, and the woman who had given him back his soul.
