Chapter 10 - The Complication

When Vincent returned to the medical suite just after noon, he found Dr. Salvatore standing anxiously outside the door, wringing his hands together. Vincent’s heart skipped a beat, a cold spike of adrenaline hitting his bloodstream. “Doctor? What’s wrong? Is it Elena?” Dr. Salvatore shook his head quickly, offering a reassuring, professional smile. “She’s resting, Vincent, but the intense stress and trauma of last night’s breach have triggered early labor contractions. She’s only seven months along, but the baby is coming now.” Vincent pushed past the doctor, bursting into the medical suite. Elena was lying on the bed, her face damp with sweat, her hands gripping the side rails as a wave of pain contracted across her body. When she saw Vincent, a look of immense relief washed over her pale face. “Vincent... you came back,” she gasped, her voice tight with strain. Vincent rushed to her side, dropping to his knees and taking her hand in both of his, pressing kisses against her knuckles. “I told you I’d always come back,” he vowed fiercely, his eyes shining with unshed tears. “Dr. Salvatore is here, the best medical equipment in the country is in this room, and I am right beside you. You and this baby are going to be fine.” Dr. Salvatore stepped up with his surgical team, checking the monitors and organizing the sterile trays. “We need to prep for an emergency premature delivery right now, Vincent. I need you to stay strong for her.” Vincent stood beside the bed, locking his gaze onto Elena’s green eyes, pouring every ounce of his strength, love, and protection into her soul as the most important battle of their lives began.
