SHADOW GUARDIAN / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6 - The Mole inside QuantumWith municipal police sirens echoing through the city skyscrapers, the surviving mercenaries fled, leaving the black SUV wrecked in the street. Daniel retrieved the stolen encrypted drive from the fallen operative before pulling Olivia back into a secure vehicle driven by Emma.

"That wasn't just a robbery," Daniel said, checking his magazine while the SUV sped toward a safehouse. "That was a coordinated extraction. They knew the exact window when server backups ran."

Inside the safehouse—a secluded mountain cabin outside Blackstone City—Daniel connected the recovered drive to an isolated offline laptop. Using military-grade decryption software provided by his former Ranger contacts, he traced the digital signature that authorized the file transfer.

Olivia sat beside him on the leather sofa, watching his hands move with rapid precision across the keyboard. "Who authorized it?" she asked softly.

A file opened on the screen, displaying an administrative security pass code belonging to Marcus Vance—Quantum’s Vice President and Olivia’s most trusted business partner for six years.

Olivia sank back into the sofa, her face turning pale. "Marcus? He was the one who encouraged me to push forward with the public launch. He helped build this company."

"He sold you out," Daniel said grimly, printing out the access logs. "Apex Syndicate—the international cartel backing these mercenaries—offered him fifty million dollars and a CEO position in a offshore shell corporation in exchange for your energy technology."

Olivia covered her face with her hands, the heavy weight of betrayal breaking through her professional exterior. "I trusted him, Daniel. I built everything with him."

Daniel set the papers down and sat beside her. He gently reached out, placing his warm hand over hers. "Betrayal hurts because it comes from people we trust," he said softly. "I learned that in the service. But you don't have to carry this alone anymore, Olivia."

Olivia looked up into his steady blue eyes, feeling an emotional warmth she hadn't experienced in years.
