Chapter 2 - The Girl with the Astronaut PajamasTo the world, Daniel Ward was just another restaurant busboy whose shift ended at midnight. The quiet man who arrived early, stayed late, and rarely spoke unless spoken to. But inside his small, spotless brownstone apartment in Millfield Heights, Daniel lived with a secret discipline forged in combat.

At 5:30 AM, his internal clock woke him before his alarm rang. He did his daily tactical workout—two hundred push-ups, three hundred sit-ups, and a five-mile run through the quiet streets. By 6:45 AM, he was flipping blueberry pancakes in the kitchen.
"Morning, sunshine," he called gently, knocking on a door covered in paper stars.
Ava emerged hugging a worn stuffed elephant. She was eight years old, with tousled blonde hair, bright blue eyes, and pajamas covered in astronauts. "Did you make pancakes, Dad?" she asked sleepily.
"Blueberry pancakes. But only after you tell me one thing you learned in science class."

Ava launched into a passionate explanation of photosynthesis while sitting at the table. Daniel listened with absolute focus—this eight-year-old girl was his entire universe. They walked six blocks to Willowbrook Elementary, practicing spelling words along the way. Other parents knew Daniel as the polite, dependable single father. They didn't know he was Staff Sergeant Daniel Ward of the 75th Ranger Regiment, honorably discharged three years ago after four combat deployments.
They didn't know his wife, Sarah, had been killed by a drunk driver while Daniel was overseas, leaving him alone to raise an eighteen-month-old toddler. He had buried his past, taken the discharge, moved to Blackstone City, and built a simple life out of routine, school drop-offs, and budget envelopes. He thought he was safe. He was wrong.
