Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

|

Two weeks passed in a blur of legal victories and grueling hospital shifts. Vincent had been officially ousted from the company, his assets remained frozen, and he was currently under investigation by the SEC. I had won the initial battle, but the war was far from over.

On a quiet Thursday evening, I was sitting in my private office at the hospital, reviewing patient charts, when a soft, hesitant knock sounded at my door.

“Come in,” I called out without looking up from my laptop.

The door opened slowly. I glanced up, expecting a nurse or a resident.

Instead, Vanessa Reed stood in the doorway.

She looked entirely different from the bloody, terrified woman I had treated on Christmas Eve. She was wearing a thick, oversized wool sweater, her blonde hair pulled back into a messy bun. She looked exhausted, pale, and incredibly fragile.

My immediate instinct was to call security, to press the panic button under my desk. This was the woman who had lived in the house bought with my money, the woman who carried the child my husband prioritized over his own wife.

But as I looked at her, I didn't see a malicious homewrecker. I saw a woman who had been just as thoroughly manipulated and broken as I had been.

“Dr. Moretti,” Vanessa whispered, her voice trembling slightly. “Please don't call security. I just... I needed to see you.”

I slowly closed my laptop, keeping my expression perfectly neutral. “You shouldn't be out of bed, Vanessa. Dr. Evans put you on strict bed rest.”

“I took a cab,” she said, stepping cautiously into the room and closing the door behind her. “I needed to say thank you. You saved my baby’s life, Claire. Even after you knew who I was... you still saved us.”

“I am a doctor,” I replied coldly. “My personal life does not dictate my medical ethics.”

Vanessa nodded, wrapping her arms protectively over her small stomach. Tears suddenly welled in her eyes, spilling over her pale cheeks.

“He told me you were divorced,” Vanessa sobbed, the dam finally breaking. “He showed me forged legal papers, Claire. He told me you were abusive, that you refused to let him go, and that he was just waiting for the final settlement to clear before we could get married properly. I had no idea he was still going home to you every night.”

I stared at her, the sheer magnitude of Vincent's psychotic deception sending a chill down my spine. He hadn't just cheated; he had orchestrated a massive, intricate psychological con on two different women simultaneously.

“Why are you telling me this, Vanessa?” I asked softly.

She reached into her purse with a shaking hand and pulled out a heavy ring of brass keys, placing them gently onto my desk.

“Because he came to my house last night,” Vanessa whispered, her eyes wide with fear. “He was frantic. He was looking for a safety deposit box he kept hidden in my basement. He said he needed the documents inside to stop you from taking his company.”

I looked down at the keys, my heart skipping a violent beat. “Did he find the box?”

“No,” Vanessa said, a dark, vengeful spark igniting in her tear-filled eyes. “Because I moved it to a storage unit the day I got out of the hospital. I want to destroy him, Claire. And I think these keys are exactly how we do it.”
