Chapter 2 - The Safehouse

|

The Chicago air was violently cold when I stepped out of the hospital’s automatic doors. The snow was coming down in thick, blinding sheets, coating the ambulance bay in a layer of pristine white. I pulled my heavy wool coat tighter around my body, the freezing wind stinging my tear-stained cheeks.

Rebecca walked silently beside me, her heels clicking rhythmically against the icy pavement. She didn't offer empty platitudes or unsolicited sympathy. She simply opened the passenger door of her waiting black town car and ushered me inside.

“He tried to follow you to the elevators,” Rebecca noted casually as the car pulled away from the curb, leaving the glowing red emergency room sign behind us. “Hospital security intercepted him. They’re escorting him off the property as we speak.”

I nodded slowly, staring blankly out the tinted window. “And Vanessa?”

“The other woman is resting comfortably in room 412,” Rebecca replied, pulling a thick manila folder from her briefcase. “Her baby is stable. Vincent is not allowed back up to the maternity ward until visiting hours tomorrow morning. By then, our preliminary financial injunctions will have hit his bank accounts.”

I rested my hand on my stomach, the reality of the night crashing over me in crushing waves. Three hours ago, I was a dedicated physician working a grueling holiday shift, hoping my husband was safe in a New York hotel room. Now, my entire life had been dismantled and laid bare in the middle of my own workplace.

“Did you freeze the joint accounts like we discussed?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

“Every single one,” Rebecca confirmed with a sharp, satisfied nod. “The moment I received your text from the staff lounge, I triggered the electronic filings. He has exactly five hundred dollars available in his personal checking account. His credit cards linked to your shared clinic assets will be declined by sunrise.”

I closed my eyes, a bitter, hollow laugh escaping my lips. Vincent had always been obsessed with appearances. He drove a Porsche, wore Rolexes, and treated the city like his own personal kingdom. He had built his ego on the illusion of limitless wealth and control. Waking up on Christmas morning with frozen assets and a public scandal was going to break him.

“Where are we going?” I asked, realizing the car was not heading toward our sprawling suburban home.

“To a corporate suite I secured under my firm’s name in the Gold Coast,” Rebecca said gently. “You are not going back to that house, Claire. Not tonight. He will tear that place apart looking for you, looking for answers. You need to sleep, and you need to protect your stress levels for the sake of your pregnancy.”

I leaned my head against the cold glass of the window, watching the city lights blur into streaks of neon and white snow. I was thirty years old, pregnant, and utterly alone. But as I felt a tiny, almost imperceptible flutter deep in my abdomen, a fierce, protective fire ignited in my chest. I wasn't going to be a victim. I was going to be a mother. And I was going to destroy the man who tried to ruin us.
