Chapter 5 - The Ambush

|

Three days after Christmas, I returned to the hospital for my scheduled shift. The holiday decorations hanging in the ER corridors looked tired and depressing, mirroring the heavy, exhausting atmosphere of the trauma center.

I moved through my morning rounds with practiced, mechanical efficiency, burying my personal nightmare beneath the chaotic demands of the emergency room. Suturing lacerations, diagnosing appendicitis, prescribing antibiotics—the routine kept my mind from spiraling into the dark abyss of my impending divorce.

At noon, I stepped out into the freezing, concrete expanse of the hospital parking garage to grab a file I had left in my car.

The moment the heavy metal doors closed behind me, a figure stepped out from behind a concrete pillar.

“Claire.”

I froze. Vincent was standing ten feet away, blocking the path to my car. He looked entirely wrecked. He hadn't shaved in days, his eyes were bloodshot, and he was wearing a rumpled trench coat over a wrinkled shirt. The polished, arrogant businessman was gone, replaced by a desperate, cornered animal.

“You aren't supposed to be here, Vincent,” I said, keeping my voice loud and authoritative, my hand hovering over the panic button on my key fob. “Rebecca told your lawyers not to contact me.”

“To hell with the lawyers, Claire!” he shouted, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. He took a frantic step toward me. “You froze my life! My cards are declining at the grocery store! I had to borrow cash from my brother just to pay for a hotel room!”

“Actions have consequences,” I replied coldly, gripping my keys tightly. “You should have thought about your credit limit before you bought a second house for your mistress.”

His face contorted, a mixture of rage and pathetic pleading. “It wasn't like that! Claire, please, you have to listen to me! I never wanted to hurt you. After we lost the baby... you were so distant. You shut me out! Vanessa was just... she was just an escape. A mistake that got out of hand.”

“A mistake?” I scoffed, a bitter, incredulous laugh escaping my lips. “You bought her a house, Vincent. You introduced her to people as your wife. You got her pregnant. That isn't a mistake. That's an entire double life.”

“I love you!” he yelled, tears actually spilling over his unshaven cheeks. He dropped to his knees on the freezing concrete, a pathetic, theatrical display of remorse. “You are my real wife, Claire! You are the woman I built my life with! Please, unfreeze the accounts. Let me come home. We can fix this for the sake of our baby!”

I looked down at the man begging on the dirty garage floor, and I felt nothing but profound, overwhelming disgust.

“You don't love me, Vincent,” I said, my voice dropping to a lethal whisper. “You love my money. And as for my baby? You will never, ever be a part of this child's life.”

I pressed the panic button on my keys. The deafening, piercing alarm of my car echoed violently through the garage, immediately drawing the attention of two security guards patrolling the next level.

Vincent scrambled to his feet, cursing violently under his breath, and fled into the stairwell before the guards could reach us. The war had officially turned ugly.
