Chapter 12 - The Checkmate

|

Vincent completely froze. He stared at the spreadsheet as if it were a venomous snake coiled on the conference table.

“I have no idea what that is,” Vincent stammered, his voice cracking violently. “It’s forged. You manufactured that to frame me.”

“Did I?” I asked, leaning forward, resting my elbows on the table. “Because I also have the encrypted hard drive from the safety deposit box you kept hidden in Vanessa’s basement. The drive contains the emails, the wire transfers, and the shipping manifests with your digital signature on every single page.”

Marcus Vance, the aggressive shark attorney, suddenly looked incredibly nervous. He slowly pushed his chair back from the table, physically distancing himself from his own client. Lawyers will defend adulterers and embezzlers all day long, but federal narcotics trafficking was a line that destroyed careers by association.

“You broke into my private property!” Vincent roared, jumping to his feet, his fists clenched in pure, unadulterated panic. “That is illegal search and seizure! It’s inadmissible in court!”

“I didn't break into anything,” I replied calmly, looking up at him with absolute disdain. “Your mistress willingly opened the box and handed the evidence to me. She was quite eager to cooperate once she realized you were planning to leave her holding the bag.”

Vincent collapsed back into his chair, entirely defeated. He put his head in his hands, breathing heavily, the reality of his total destruction finally crashing down upon him.

“Here is our counter-offer,” Rebecca stated, sliding a new stack of legal documents across the table.

“You will sign over your fifty percent share of the clinics to Claire, giving her sole ownership, effective immediately,” Rebecca commanded. “You will sign over the deed to the marital home, and the deed to the Lincoln Park townhouse. You will also sign a legally binding document relinquishing all parental rights to her unborn child, forever.”

Vincent looked up, tears of pure terror and desperation in his eyes. “Claire, please. You’re leaving me with nothing. I’ll be homeless.”

“If you sign these papers today, we will allow you to walk out of this room, and we will not hand the hard drive over to the DEA,” I promised coldly. “But if you hesitate for even a second, I will make the phone call right now, and you will be arrested before you reach the elevators.”

Vincent stared at me. He saw the cold, unyielding iron in my eyes. He realized the woman he had manipulated and dismissed for years was entirely gone, replaced by a ruthless force he could not fight.

With shaking, trembling hands, Vincent picked up the pen and signed his entire life away.
