Chapter 10 - The Hidden Box

|

Saturday morning was bitterly cold, the Chicago wind howling violently off Lake Michigan. I pulled my heavy coat tight against the chill as I walked into the sprawling, windowless self-storage facility on the outskirts of the city.

Vanessa was already waiting for me near unit 402. She looked pale, wrapped in a thick scarf, clutching the ring of brass keys tightly in her gloved hands. We didn't exchange pleasantries. We were two soldiers meeting on a frozen battlefield.

“He called me last night,” Vanessa said quietly as she unlocked the rolling metal door. “He was drunk. He screamed at me for moving the box. He said if I didn't give it back, he would expose my family’s business to the IRS.”

“He’s drowning,” I replied, stepping into the dim, dusty unit. “And drowning men will pull anyone down with them to stay afloat.”

In the center of the empty unit sat a heavy, fireproof metal lockbox. Vanessa handed me the keys.

I knelt on the cold concrete floor, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm against my ribs. I inserted the small brass key into the lock and twisted. It opened with a heavy, satisfying click.

I threw the lid back.

Inside the box were stacks of hundred-dollar bills, bundled in tight rubber bands—at least fifty thousand dollars in untraceable cash. But I didn't care about the money. My eyes locked onto a small, black external hard drive and a thick stack of printed ledgers resting beneath the cash.

I pulled the ledgers out, flipping through the dense pages of numbers and names.

“What is it?” Vanessa asked, kneeling beside me, her breath pluming in the freezing air.

“It’s a secondary set of books,” I whispered, absolute shock washing over me.

Vincent hadn't just been embezzling from the clinic’s expansion fund to pay for his affair. The ledgers detailed massive, systemic kickbacks from a corrupt pharmaceutical vendor in New York. Vincent had been intentionally over-ordering highly restricted, expensive narcotics and medical supplies through our clinic’s license, selling the excess back to black-market distributors for pure profit.

His “business trips” to New York hadn't just been an excuse to see Vanessa. They were the logistical hubs for a massive, multi-state illegal drug diversion ring.

“He’s a smuggler,” I breathed out, the sheer magnitude of his criminality making me dizzy. “He was using my medical license and my clinic to traffic narcotics.”

“Oh my god,” Vanessa gasped, covering her mouth with her hands. “If the feds find out... he’ll go to prison for decades.”

I looked at the black hard drive, a cold, terrifyingly powerful smile slowly spreading across my face. Vincent wanted to threaten my medical license? He wanted to threaten custody of my unborn child?

“He isn't just going to prison,” I said, slipping the hard drive into my coat pocket. “I am going to bury him under the jail.”
