Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Coup

|
The corporate headquarters of Moretti & Hayes Urgent Care sat in a sleek, glass-fronted building in the financial district. Vincent and I had built the company from a single, struggling clinic into a multi-million dollar regional powerhouse.
On Monday morning, I walked into the main boardroom wearing a tailored navy suit, my posture perfectly rigid, radiating an absolute, terrifying authority. Rebecca walked closely beside me, carrying a thick stack of legal binders.
The entire board of directors was already seated around the massive mahogany table. Vincent sat at the head of the table, looking incredibly haggard, his eyes darting nervously around the room. He had called an emergency meeting to address the sudden, catastrophic freezing of the corporate accounts.
“Claire, you have no right to be here,” Vincent spat as I took the empty seat directly across from him. “This is a business operations meeting. You handle the medical side.”
“I am a fifty-percent shareholder and the co-founder of this corporation, Vincent,” I replied smoothly, opening my folder. “I have every right to be here. Especially when the CEO is actively embezzling from the company.”
The board members gasped collectively, shifting uncomfortably in their expensive leather chairs.
“That is slander!” Vincent roared, slamming his fist onto the table. “I have never stolen a dime from this company!”
Rebecca stood up, her presence commanding the room entirely. She didn't yell; she simply began distributing thick, bound financial dossiers to every member of the board.
“These documents contain the findings of a preliminary forensic audit initiated by my firm,” Rebecca stated clinically. “Over the past eighteen months, Mr. Moretti has authorized irregular, unreceipted cash withdrawals from the clinic’s expansion fund, totaling over four hundred thousand dollars.”
Vincent’s face went stark white. He looked at the documents, his mouth opening and closing like a suffocating fish.
“The funds were not used for clinical expansion,” Rebecca continued relentlessly. “They were funneled through a shell corporation to purchase residential real estate in Lincoln Park, as well as luxury vehicles and international travel for an individual who is not affiliated with this company.”
The chairman of the board, an older, ruthless investor named Harrison, flipped through the pages, his expression turning to stone. “Vincent. Is this true?”
“It was a loan!” Vincent stammered frantically, looking around the room for any shred of support. “I was going to pay it back! It was a temporary liquidity maneuver!”
“It is corporate fraud,” Harrison corrected sharply, tossing the binder onto the table.
I leaned forward, locking eyes with the man who had destroyed our marriage.

“As the medical director and equal shareholder,” I announced, my voice echoing coldly in the boardroom, “I am officially calling for a vote of no confidence. I want Vincent Moretti removed as CEO, effective immediately, pending a full federal investigation into his financial crimes.”
Vincent stared at me, the utter devastation of his empire reflecting in his terrified eyes. The trap had slammed shut, and he was completely, helplessly caught.
