Chapter 26 - A Plea DealFrom his cell at the county jail, Kevin finally faced the inevitability of his situation. With the notary’s confession and the financial audit complete, his defense attorney advised him that a trial would result in a maximum sentence of twelve years.

In late October, Kevin accepted a plea bargain. He pled guilty to one count of grand larceny and one count of scheme to defraud in exchange for a five-year sentence in a medium-security facility and full restitution orders.

Before he was transferred to the state penitentiary, Kevin requested a final meeting with Claire.

She met him in the visitation room, separated by a thick pane of glass. He looked older, his hair graying at the temples, the arrogance that had defined him entirely stripped away.

"I don't expect you to forgive me," Kevin said through the small speaker grille. "I just... I needed to tell you that you were right. I lost my way."

"You lost more than that, Kevin," Claire said calmly. "You lost your family. I hope you use the next five years to figure out why."

She stood up and walked away without looking back.
