Chapter 16 - Megan’s ConfessionThat evening, a timid knock sounded at Claire’s hotel room door. When Claire opened it, Megan was standing in the hallway, her eyes red-rimmed and swollen from crying.

"Mom," Megan sobbed, taking a hesitant step forward. "I'm so sorry."

Claire didn't immediately move to embrace her. She stood in the doorway, her heart torn between maternal instinct and the deep betrayal of the past week. "Come in, Megan."

Inside the room, Megan collapsed onto the edge of the bed, her shoulders shaking. "Kevin told me you knew. He told me you agreed to let the house be used as temporary collateral so he wouldn't go to prison for debt default. He said if you came up this summer, the bank assessors would see you there and ruin the agreement."

"And you believed him without calling me?" Claire asked, her voice tight with suppressed emotion.

"He showed me a signed agreement with your name on it!" Megan cried, looking up. "I thought you two were working together to keep it quiet from Grandpa! I left that voicemail because Kevin said if you showed up, the whole deal would collapse!"

Claire looked at her daughter, seeing the genuine panic and remorse in her eyes, but the reality remained unchanged: trust, once shattered, could not be rebuilt with a single tearful explanation.
