Chapter 14 - The Paper TrailBy noon, Claire and her legal counsel, Mark Harrison, were huddled in a high-rise office downtown. Surrounding them were tax assessments, bank transfers, and corporate filings spanning the last three years.

"Kevin was drowning," Mark explained, pointing to a series of red-lined spreadsheets on his monitor. "His logistics company took on massive debt during the expansion last spring. "And my daughter?" Claire asked, her heart aching at the thought of her own child being complicit. "Did Megan know?"

Mark hesitated, pulling up a secondary file. "The voicemail Megan left you—telling you not to come this summer—was sent forty-eight hours after Kevin filed the fraudulent power of attorney. Claire closed her eyes. The physical loss of the cabin was painful, but the realization that her daughter had helped lock the door was a wound that ran far deeper.
