Chapter 13 - Unannounced VisitorsBefore Claire could dial her attorney, the gravel driveway crunched under the tires of an unfamiliar black SUV. Two men in sharp charcoal suits stepped out, carrying leather briefcases and looking around the property with the clinical eye of assessors.

Claire opened the green front door before they could knock. "Can I help you?"
The taller man offered a brief, unsympathetic smile. "Mrs. Claire Sterling? I’m Marcus Vance, representing Pinnacle Asset Management. We are here to conduct a pre-possession audit of the property."
"You’re trespassing," Arthur said, stepping up beside his daughter, his posture rigid. "This property is currently under legal dispute regarding a fraudulent transfer."

Marcus Vance didn't look surprised. He pulled a sealed envelope from his briefcase. "The court order granting temporary possession to Pinnacle was signed yesterday afternoon. Mr. Kevin Sterling defaulted on the second mortgage installment last week. As far as the bank is concerned, this property belongs to the lienholders."
Claire looked at the man, feeling the ground shift beneath her feet once more. Kevin hadn't just stolen the cabin; he had already lost it.
