Chapter 15 - THE BABY HE THOUGHT HE COULD CLAIM

|

The discovery of the original ledger changed everything.

It proved that Camden had received money from the Whitmore trust while concealing Nora's ownership. It also showed that Gideon had paid Arthur Pike to keep Eleanor isolated and prevent her from contacting the family.

But one document was more disturbing than the rest.

It was a private agreement dated shortly before Nora and Camden's wedding.

The agreement described the expected birth of a direct Whitmore heir and outlined a plan to transfer voting rights to a company controlled by Camden.

Nora read the final paragraph twice.

It stated that Camden would become the child's legal financial guardian if Nora was deemed incapable of managing the inheritance.

Holly's expression hardened.

“This is why he's trying to portray you as unstable.”

Nora looked at the document.

“He planned this before we were married.”

Daniel nodded.

“Your grandfather believed the child would strengthen the family's control over the trust.”

“My child is not a financial instrument.”

“No,” Holly said. “And the agreement has no legal force without your consent.”

Nora placed a hand over her stomach.

The baby moved.

She looked at the documents again.

“Can Camden use the fact that we're married?”

“Not to claim the trust,” Holly replied. “And not to take custody simply because he wants control of the inheritance.”

Nora felt some of the tension leave her shoulders.

Then Marcus entered the room.

“Camden's attorney has requested an emergency hearing.”

“For what?”

“Temporary guardianship rights and access to your medical records.”

Nora stared.

“He's trying to use the pregnancy.”

“Yes.”

Holly closed the folder.

“We'll oppose it.”

The hearing was scheduled for the following week.

Camden arrived with two attorneys and his mother, Margaret Rourke.

Margaret had never liked Nora. She had always considered her too independent, too ordinary, and insufficiently grateful for the life Camden had given her.

Now she sat beside her son and looked at Nora as if she were the one who had committed a crime.

The judge reviewed the filings.

Camden's attorney argued that Nora had become emotionally unstable after leaving the marital home.

Holly presented the medical records showing that Nora had attended every prenatal appointment and had been cleared by her physician.

Then she presented the original incorporation documents.

She showed the forged signature.

She introduced the Whitmore trust records.

And finally, she submitted the private agreement concerning the unborn child.

The judge read it in silence.

Then he looked at Camden.

“Mr. Rourke, did you sign this document?”

Camden's attorney stood.

“My client declines to answer.”

The judge turned to Nora.

“Mrs. Rourke, do you believe your husband is attempting to obtain control of your child's inheritance?”

Nora looked at Camden.

For eleven years, she had softened her words to protect him.

Not today.

“Yes, Your Honor.”

“Why?”

“Because he has spent years hiding my identity, removing my name from our company, and concealing the fact that my mother was alive. Now that I'm carrying his child, he wants legal control over the inheritance attached to that child.”

The judge looked back at Camden.

The temporary guardianship request was denied.

As Nora left the courtroom, Margaret Rourke stepped into her path.

“You've destroyed my son.”

Nora looked at her.

“No. I stopped protecting him.”

Margaret's expression twisted.

Then she leaned close and whispered:

“You have no idea what he is capable of.”

May you like

Nora stared at her.

“Neither did I. That's why I'm finally finding out.”
