Chapter 12 - THE PROMISE HE MADE TO HER MOTHER

|

Eleanor was taken to a hospital for a full medical examination.

The doctors found that she was underweight and had not received proper care, but she was stable enough to speak with investigators.

Nora stayed beside her.

For the first time in thirty years, mother and daughter were in the same room without someone controlling the conversation.

Nora wanted to ask everything.

Why had Eleanor left her at the bus terminal?

Why had she not returned?

Why had she never found a way to contact her?

But every time Nora opened her mouth, she saw how frightened her mother still was.

So she began with one question.

“Did you know Camden before he met me?”

Eleanor nodded.

“He came to the Whitmore estate with Gideon. He was young, ambitious, and very charming.”

“What did they want?”

“Your grandfather had been using the family trust to finance shipping operations. Some were legitimate. Others were not. I found records that showed money moving through companies that didn't exist.”

“Camden was involved?”

“Not at first. Gideon brought him in because he was good with numbers and wanted to build a company of his own.”

Nora looked down.

“Breakwater.”

Eleanor nodded.

“Your grandfather believed Camden could be useful. He also believed you were still alive.”

“Why didn't he tell me?”

“He wanted control over the trust. He thought if Camden married you, he could influence the inheritance.”

Nora's voice became quiet.

“So my marriage was planned.”

“Your grandfather arranged the introduction. Camden made the choice to pursue you.”

“Did he know I was the missing girl?”

“Yes.”

Nora closed her eyes.

Eleanor reached for her hand.

“I am sorry.”

“Did you know he was courting me?”

“No. By the time I learned, I was already being held in the facility.”

“Camden visited you?”

“Several times.”

“What did he say?”

Eleanor looked toward the window.

“He told me you were happy. That you loved him. That you were building a life together.”

Nora laughed once, bitterly.

“He made sure I never knew you were alive.”

“He said if I contacted you, he would destroy your marriage and make sure you lost your child.”

Nora felt cold.

“He threatened you with my baby?”

“He said the Whitmore trust had a clause that gave him a claim to the child as the next heir.”

“That's not how the trust works.”

“I know that now. But I was frightened. I had already lost you once.”

Nora looked at her mother.

“Why did you finally send the message?”

Eleanor smiled faintly.

“A nurse helped me escape. I found a phone and remembered the family office number. I couldn't reach Daniel, so I contacted someone who had once helped me.”

“Who?”

“Margaret Ellis. She gave me the number of a private investigator.”

Nora took a breath.

“And then you came here.”

“I wanted to see you before Gideon moved me again.”

Nora held her mother's hand.

“You don't have to be afraid of them anymore.”

Eleanor looked at her.

“You don't understand. Camden isn't afraid of losing the company. He's afraid of what happens if the truth comes out.”

“What truth?”

Eleanor hesitated.

Then she said, “Your grandfather didn't disappear the money alone. Camden helped him move it after your marriage. And the money wasn't the only thing they took.”

Nora frowned.

“What else?”

May you like

Eleanor leaned closer.

“Your grandfather's final will.”
