Chapter 13 - THE WILL THAT NEVER REACHED THE COURT

|

Daniel Whitmore arrived at the hospital carrying a sealed envelope.

He had been informed that Eleanor was alive, but seeing her in person left him visibly shaken.

For a long moment, he stood at the foot of her bed without speaking.

Then he approached.

“Eleanor.”

She looked at him.

“Daniel.”

He took her hand.

“We thought you were dead.”

“I know.”

“I'm sorry.”

Eleanor gave him a tired smile.

“You were not the one who locked the door.”

Nora watched them carefully.

There was affection between them, but also years of unanswered questions.

Daniel placed the envelope on the bedside table.

“This was recovered from the family archive. It was written by your father shortly before his death.”

Eleanor stared at it.

“My father's final will?”

Daniel nodded.

“It was never submitted to probate. Gideon claimed it had been destroyed.”

Nora opened the envelope carefully.

The document was brief, but its language was clear.

Eleanor was to retain full control of her inheritance. Any direct descendant would inherit her interest if she was confirmed deceased or permanently incapacitated. More importantly, the will prohibited any spouse from exercising control over the trust without the beneficiary's written consent.

Camden had never been entitled to the money.

Not through marriage.

Not through the baby.

Not through any arrangement with Gideon.

Nora read the final paragraph.

“If any person attempts to obtain control of the trust through coercion, deception, or concealment of a beneficiary's identity, the trustees shall refer the matter to the authorities and suspend all distributions.”

Holly looked up.

“This is the clause Camden was trying to avoid.”

Daniel nodded.

“If Eleanor's confinement was connected to an effort to control the trust, the consequences could be severe.”

Nora looked at her mother.

“Did Camden know about this will?”

“Yes,” Eleanor said. “He saw a copy before your wedding.”

“Then he knew he had no legal claim.”

“He knew.”

Holly closed the folder.

“We need the original document authenticated and submitted to the court.”

Daniel nodded.

“I've already contacted the trustees.”

Nora leaned back.

For years, Camden had acted as if the company and the trust belonged to him.

He had humiliated her in public, removed her name from the records, and treated her pregnancy as an inconvenience.

Now she understood the scale of his deception.

He had built his empire on money he was never supposed to control.

Her phone rang.

Camden.

She answered.

“What do you want?”

“I heard your mother has been found.”

Nora looked at Eleanor.

“Yes.”

“That's good.”

Nora almost laughed.

“You don't get to pretend this is a happy reunion.”

“I never wanted her harmed.”

“Then why did you leave her in that house?”

“I didn't know she was there.”

“Your payments funded it.”

“Gideon handled the accounts.”

“You visited her.”

Silence.

“Camden?”

He exhaled.

“I was trying to keep things from getting worse.”

“For whom?”

“For everyone.”

Nora's voice hardened.

“You don't get to use that excuse anymore.”

He lowered his voice.

“You need to understand something. If the original will becomes public, Gideon will destroy everything to keep himself out of prison.”

“Then he should have thought about that before he took my mother.”

“Nora, please. We can still work this out.”

“No. We can't.”

She ended the call.

Then Eleanor reached for her hand.

“There's one more thing you should know.”

Nora looked at her.

“Camden didn't just want the trust. He wanted something from you personally.”

“What?”

May you like

Eleanor's eyes filled.

“Your grandfather believed you had inherited something your mother hid before she disappeared.”
