Chapter 14 - THE SECRET INSIDE THE SILVER BIRD

|

Nora removed the silver bird pendant from beneath her sweater.

She had worn it since childhood.

The pendant was old, slightly scratched, and heavier than it looked. Evelyn had once told her that it was the only thing Nora had possessed when she was found at the bus terminal.

Eleanor looked at it.

“You still have it.”

“Of course.”

“May I?”

Nora placed it in her mother's hand.

Eleanor turned it over.

“Your father gave this to me. It was made with a hidden compartment.”

Nora frowned.

“I thought it was solid.”

Eleanor pressed a small point beneath one wing.

A tiny section opened.

Inside was a folded strip of paper, so small that Nora had never noticed it.

Her mother carefully removed it.

The paper contained a sequence of numbers and a handwritten symbol.

“What is it?” Nora asked.

“A key to the original trust ledger.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“Your father kept a second set of records?”

Eleanor nodded.

“He believed your grandfather would eventually try to take control of the shipping operation. He hid proof of every unauthorized transfer.”

“Where?”

Eleanor looked at Nora.

“I don't know. Your father never told me the location. He said the numbers would lead to it.”

Daniel studied the paper.

“These look like coordinates.”

Holly took a photograph.

“We'll have them analyzed.”

Nora stared at the pendant.

“So Camden knew I had this?”

Eleanor nodded.

“He asked about it during one of his visits. I told him it had been lost.”

Nora remembered Camden asking to see the pendant during their engagement.

He had held it between his fingers, turning it over as though examining a piece of jewelry.

She had thought he was curious about its history.

Now she understood.

He had been searching for the hidden compartment.

Holly placed the pendant in a protective evidence container.

“We need to document this before anyone tries to claim it.”

Daniel agreed.

The numbers were analyzed by a specialist. They pointed to an old records vault beneath a commercial building in Providence.

The building had once belonged to Nora's father.

A search warrant was obtained.

Two days later, Marcus called.

“We found the vault.”

Nora stood.

“What was inside?”

“Ledgers, original shipping manifests, bank records, and a sealed envelope addressed to Eleanor.”

Nora's mother covered her mouth.

“Read it.”

Marcus paused.

“It's personal. I think you should be here.”

They drove to Providence that afternoon.

The vault was a small concrete room behind a false wall. Inside were boxes of documents and a metal case.

The envelope lay on top.

Eleanor opened it with trembling hands.

The letter was written by her father.

My dearest Eleanor, if you are reading this, then I have failed to protect you from Gideon. The records are safe. The truth is safe. But I fear the people around you will use your daughter to reach what they cannot take from you.

Nora read over her mother's shoulder.

The final line was written in darker ink.

Never allow Gideon to control the child. She is the only person who can expose the entire operation.

Nora looked at Daniel.

“Why me?”

Daniel opened the first ledger.

“Because the original ownership shares were transferred into a separate account under your birth identity.”

Nora stared.

The records did not merely prove Camden's fraud.

They showed that she had owned a controlling interest in Breakwater from the beginning.

And the next page contained a list of payments made to Camden personally.
