Chapter 17 - THE WOMAN WHO CAME BACK

|

The hospital security team found the woman on a bench outside the emergency entrance.

She was thin, older, and dressed in a gray coat.

Her hair was silver at the temples.

A scarf covered most of her neck.

But the pendant was unmistakable.

A silver bird with its wings spread.

Nora stopped several feet away.

The woman looked up.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then the woman whispered, “Nora.”

Nora's knees nearly gave way.

She knew the voice.

Not from memory.

From the recording.

From the way the woman had said her name in the old cassette.

“Mom?”

Eleanor began to cry.

Nora crossed the distance between them.

She did not run.

She could not.

She simply reached out and touched her mother's face.

“You're alive.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“I tried to come back.”

Nora's voice broke.

“You left me.”

“I know.”

“You left me alone.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

Eleanor took a shaking breath.

“Because they threatened to kill you if I came back.”

Nora stared at her.

“Who?”

“Your grandfather. Gideon. And later, Camden.”

Nora felt the world narrow.

“Camden?”

Eleanor nodded.

“He visited me at the facility. He said he had found you. He said you were safe. He told me that if I tried to contact you, he would make sure you lost the child you were carrying.”

Nora stepped back.

“He knew I was pregnant?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell anyone?”

“I tried. They moved me. They changed my name. They kept me under medication.”

Nora's eyes filled.

“How did you escape?”

Eleanor touched the bird pendant.

“The nurse who helped me remembered your name. She gave me a phone and enough money to travel. I came to Boston as soon as I could.”

Nora looked at her mother.

Thirty years of questions stood between them.

But there was also a living woman.

A woman who had never stopped waiting.

Eleanor looked toward the hospital doors.

“Is she here?”

Nora smiled through tears.

“Your granddaughter. Evelyn.”

Eleanor began sobbing.

“May I see her?”

Nora took her hand.

“Yes.”

They walked inside together.

At the nursery, Nora lifted Evelyn carefully and brought her to the glass.

Eleanor pressed her fingertips against it.

“She has your eyes.”

Nora laughed softly.

“She has your stubbornness.”

Eleanor looked at her daughter.

“I am so sorry.”

Nora wanted to say that everything was forgiven.

But it wasn't.

Not yet.

Instead, she said, “You can tell me the whole story. But you don't have to do it all tonight.”

Eleanor nodded.

Then her expression changed.

“Camden must not know I'm here.”

Nora looked at her.

“He already knows.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“Then we're in danger.”

Before Nora could answer, the hospital alarm sounded.

A security officer ran toward them.

“Someone has entered the maternity wing using a staff access card.”

Marcus appeared at the end of the corridor.

“Get Nora and the baby into the secure room!”

May you like

Eleanor grabbed Nora's hand.

And for the first time in thirty years, mother and daughter ran together.
