Chapter 1 - THE INCIDENT|

The morning above the Hudson had not yet decided what color it wanted to be. Gray at the edges, pale gold at the center, the kind of light that made twelve acres of private land look softer than it was. Wrought iron gate, fourteen feet high. Gravel drive. Autumn roses browning at the tips. Four stories of cold gray stone.

Then the scream.

"Get out of my house! You and that filthy little brat!"

Isabella Romano stood on the fourth step from the bottom—white silk robe, a porcelain cup steaming in one hand, pale hair loose against her shoulders. The words came down the marble like broken glass, and they kept falling after she had finished saying them, ringing off the walls, finding every corner of the grand hallway, refusing to die.

The three-year-old did not cry. She did not run. She did not blink.

She stood in her duck socks on the cold stone, one small fist closed around a gold button she had found on the floor moments earlier, the other hand still raised, still offering it up to the woman who had just screamed at her.

"Pretty," Lily whispered. She said it again, quieter, as if the first one hadn't landed. "Pretty."

Behind her, Rosa dropped to her knees so fast her apron tore against the marble. Four years. Four years of invisible mornings, of folded towels, of swallowed breath. And now this—her daughter standing perfectly still in front of a woman wearing a diamond worth more than everything Rosa had ever owned in her life.

Nobody moved.

Not the butler standing near the coat room. Not the housekeeper holding a silver tray of mail. Not the two guards stationed by the front entrance.

Then, from the top of the grand staircase, a single footstep sounded.

Slow. Deliberate.

Don Moretti had been standing there longer than anyone knew, resting his broad hands on the carved mahogany banister. He wore his tailored dark coat, his face set in a quiet, unreadable mask.

He had seen something in the little girl's face that no one else in that hallway had seen yet.
