Chapter 20 - The Echo of the Past

That evening, as the sun set over the sprawling estate, Dante and Elena sat on the rear patio, watching Sophia run across the lawn with Silvio's massive guard dog. It was a picture of perfect, hard-won domestic bliss.
Suddenly, Dante's encrypted, secure satellite phone—a device only his top three lieutenants had the number to—buzzed violently against the patio table.
The jarring sound shattered the peaceful atmosphere.
Dante’s smile faded. His jaw locked instantly, the relaxed fiancé vanishing, replaced seamlessly by the cold, calculating mafia boss. He picked up the phone.
"Speak," Dante ordered.
There was a heavy, ragged breathing on the other end of the line. It didn't sound like Matteo or Silvio.
"Hello, Dante," a thick, heavily accented Russian voice rasped through the speaker.
Dante's blood turned to absolute ice. Ivan Sokolov was dead. He had seen the body himself. But this voice belonged to a much older, much more dangerous ghost.
"Who is this?" Dante demanded, standing up, his hand instinctively reaching for the weapon holstered at his waist.
"Ivan was a fool to attack you in your own home," the voice chuckled, a dark, metallic sound. "But he was my son. And in the Bratva, we do not forgive the spilling of family blood, Moretti."
Elena stood up, sensing the sudden, terrifying shift in the air. She grabbed Dante's arm, her eyes wide with fear.
"You sent a thief to steal my empire," Dante said coldly, staring out into the dark treeline beyond the estate. "Your son paid the price for his arrogance. Stay in Russia, old man, or share his fate."
"I am not in Russia, Dante," the voice whispered smoothly. "I am in Chicago. I have allied with the western families. We know about your push for legitimacy. We know you are softening."
The voice paused, letting the threat hang heavy in the freezing air.
"We are coming for your new Queen, Dante. And the little girl who ruined our heist. Keep your eyes open."
The line went dead.
Dante slowly lowered the phone. He looked at Elena, seeing the fear in her eyes, but also the fierce, protective fire that had allowed her to survive this long.
He looked out at Sophia, playing innocently in the grass.
"Dante?" Elena whispered, gripping his hand tightly. "Who was it?"
May you like
"The past," Dante said grimly, his dark eyes turning entirely black, ready to plunge back into the violence he had tried to escape. "The war isn't over, Elena. It’s just moving west."
He pulled her close, kissing her forehead, a silent vow to protect them against the coming storm. The Bratva was coming for his family, but they had no idea the monster they were about to wake.
